If you are too close, the torpedos will not arm. I cannot give you any advice for auto targeting as I play manual only.

No WWII boat could go to 1000 meters; at least they could not and return to the surface. Some, perhaps got down to 600 ft. or so, but this was rare.

I'm guessing that you are playing stock. Most SH4 fans use the 1.5 version and one of the mega-mods. You can read the posts and make up your own mind.
