I come late for the thread, but I also want to wish you the best for your surgery and a quick recovery!

The best TV series ever made:
Northern Exposure - as the German cartoonist Tom said in an interview: "the only intelligent american tv series"

The second best:
The Wire - I can't preach enough to the heathens who haven't seen it yet. Bakkels gave a good describtion of it.

For pure laughter - as this speeds up recovery:

Extras (with Ricky Gervais)

It seems that most of the time only cable shows have the endurance to take the time to narrate something and to break with the rules of conventional storytelling.
