Miami, I was stationed there for 14 years, left in 2000. Wife and I sailed down there from Maine last year. I did not recognize the skyline the night we came in through Government Cut. No doubt Miami has certainly gotten bigger and brighter.
The city is known more for it's night life, water sports and manatees than any maritime and or historical significance. South Beach or Coconut Grove were the places to go but always a mad house no matter where you went Friday night, Bayfront Park isn't that bad either but mostly a tourist trap. Get in way early to avoid parking hassles. Or head down to Key West there's Sloppy Joes and some of the best seafood restaurants in the world on Islamorada and Marathon keys
We used city transit system to get down to South Dade and was pretty pleased with that. Oh, and unless you speaky de espanioly you may find it very hard to get help with anything outside of your hotel property and accomadations.
Have fun but stick to the beaten path
