To be serious, there is one thing to keep in mind about the DD's and how killer-skilled they are
Escorts. There main purpose was to keep the subamrine off from the convoy and to keep it submerged and busy. Their main purpose was not actually to sink the sub. In that way you could protect the convoy from being attacked by the sub.
Hunter-killer groups or task forces. There main purpose was to find and sink the sub/-s. (hunt and kill)
With latest IC mod Jason made the escorts alittle bit closer to the convoy. Now it's not as easy to sneak in to the convoy. If the detect you in some way, they for sure keep you off the convoy and absolutely keep you busy. If you are in a good attack position (in advance) and keep your self invisible and silent they don't detect you if you don't do anything stupid.
Hunter killer groups should be elite. They also where in real, and I think they are in game? If they detect you, and start working together and coordinate their attackruns, you should be sunk or at the best, badly damaged.
