I'm sure it was. And impossible in all but the best weather, with the boat barely moving.
And then, depending on location and how late in the war it was, there also was the risk of getting spotted by Allied aircraft (or an armed enemy ship) right in the middle of the procedure. At best you manage to jettison the torpedo, close everything up, get everyone below, and dive without taking fatal damage from whatever attack is subsequently mounted against you.
At worst, the enemy's been tracking you on radar and is already heading straight for you at attack speed before you even see it coming.
