No, it's not realistic. Real life convoys would have dispersed or at least tried to ram.
But in early years I have plundered many a convoy, expending all my torpedoes and deck gun ammo.
Perhaps 3 or 4 times I have wiped out entire convoys single-handedly.
If you can get a Type IX early enough you can really cause some damage.
