That is not true, especially where the 6900 series is concerned. 6900 series cards use a new design for the way its shaders work compared to cards of the 5x00 series and 6800 series, more on it here

Anyway, with the 6x00 series AMD changed their numberng scheme and 6800 series represent the mid range now, instead of high end, iwth 5x00 5700 were the mid range cards.
