In a near ideal 90 degree position all you need to remember is that AOB is a 10 degree increment from 90 or an addition if they're coming starboard side.
With this little piece of information, and with the actual sighting of the ship, you're able to trace the ship without sonar. a 5 minute observation with yo-yo scoping is all you need to get a plot and bearing. Connect the dots, and if you're divergent add 2 degrees right or subtract if left. rinse and repeat as deemed necessary and eventually you'll hit.
