This topic birngs to my mind my early days of childhood spent in Catholic school. From kindergarten to 8th grade (roughly age 14 years), whenever Lent came around we were required to specify what we were giving up for the Lenten period. On top of specifying our "sacrifice" we were also graded by the nuns on our adherance to our pledge. A rather large number of my classmates, including myself, wracked our brains to figure out a pledge that would satisfy the nuns criteria with minimal impact to ourselves. As I remember, the pledges were "honored" more in breach than observance. I am currently what is referred to a "lapsed Catholic", which seems to imply my license has expired. I am rather glad to be done with all the ritual and observances, but if I had to chose now I would give up sacrificing.
