SH3 didn't have it either. It comes only with the wonderful SH3 Commander from JScones. I've been wishing for something similar in SH4.
Elanaiba told me that SH5 would have such a function, and I've been shown a screenshot of a function in the Editor that may allow exactly that. I haven't pursued it further, partly because I don't have the game (a good reason for not looking at the in-game functions
), but I'm also in no hurry because of the limited number of ships currently available. If I were to apply real ship names at this time you would mainly get American names that weren't really available until after 1941.
When there are more ships I will start looking into it.

Unfortunately that's been true of every subsim there has ever been, starting at least with
Silent Service back in 1985.
