Also in the park, very close by, the Japanese Tea Gardens and the De Young Museum.
Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach are pleasant except for the lack of parking. To me those neighborhoods are better for walking (with hills, in N. Beach).

Sorry, didn't miss this before, but was reading it on the phone, and didn't feel like typing on it
We're stating near Fisherman's Wharf (closer to
Pampanito, actually)at the suggestion of my wife's cousin who lived there for 20 years before moving back to NYC a couple years ago (she thought there was more kid stuff right out the door to do). We're not planning on even renting a car I think.
I'm copying all these to my phone, too, so I have them at all times.
Regarding the distance thing above, yeah, the next city from ABQ north is Denver (444 miles), West is Phoenix (329 miles), South is El Paso (a crap town compared to Denver or Phoenix, frankly it doesn't even count...) is 229 miles. East? Oklahoma City, perhaps (555 miles)?
Stuff is spread out, that's for sure
