It's from The Graduate - arguably the most famous line from the movie, certainly one of the most iconic. If you haven't seen it, or aren't familiar with the film and its "status" in movie history (especially as a representation of young adult angst and confusion at the end of the 1960s) it no doubt means absolutely nothing. But here's a guy (Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin) who IIRC has just finished college and is having an existential crisis of sorts and everyone is pushing and prodding and questioning about what he's going to do with his life and his future and he doesn't know.

And I guess this well-respected representative of the older generation takes him aside like he's going to tell him The Secret Of It All and all he has to say is "...plastics" because there's a big future and lots of money to be made in that field. I guess the point is, a young person of that generation just starting out in life and having an existential crisis is looking for a little more in the way of answers than that.

And now I've gone on and on about a movie that I don't even like all that much, despite its reputation as a classic.
