Avoid engaging them in the shallows.
Establish/verify the depth of the thermocline before you engage.
Small passenger carriers don't worth the risk (gamewise). If I went in, I'd go for a cruiser if possible.

I almost always start my careers in S-boats and I'm always glad when I get a "proper" fleetboat!
