That's actually a good idea. I was thinking some sort of geared servo rigged upto a voltage meter, allowing the USB software to determine angle of movement.

But if you put that mouse over a graduated (think barcode) surface, then there a lot of possible applications for amateur motion controls.

Also, I don't think there's anything specific (aside from a cheap DYI ROV), but at www.revision3.com, look for the cancelled show Systm under archived shows. Lots of cool tech DYI projects you may find an application for. Things like when Gmail gets a new mail, a physical flag gets raised on your machine. Could do something similar for alerts from crew members.
