There is a problem with saved games which I still have not pinned down. Since my original post, I have reloaded my campaign file 4 times. Twice, Depth under keel worked normally and twice it was not available.
I disabled online saves, but it did not help. Thankfully, I am out in the middle of the Atlantic, so it is not really an issue so far.
