Obviously, in my case, a bad connection which degradates with heat.

I wish I had a pound for every technical wobbler I have had over 15 years PC use which turned out to have
a relatively simple answer.
Well, that's similar to what mine did, except the display wasn't distorted. Computers are funny that way when something goes wrong - it is probably something simple.
