I guess you are to young to remember the Vietnam War and a major fuss created when "the Pentagon Papers." were "leaked", in 1971(the year Assange was born), to a certain Democrat Senator from Alaska. Perhaps you are also too young to remember another famous incident, from the same time frame, often referred to as "Watergate."
Assange is doing nothing that has not been done for years now. It is just that the internet allows for a much easier transfer of information.
