I am no big fan of google, so I can't tell much about google apps, however I found Google Wave to be usefull for delayed as well as for real-time communication. It provides all the features that Rivet needs. I used it successfully in a programming project last year. Unfortunately doesn't google support it anymore, but you still can access and use it.
It's a no-brainer to use, takes max 5 minutes to learn it and to create a wave & invite others.
They do need an google account however, but that's also matter of 2 minutes. I prefer to use a throwaway email address for a google account...
