I guess Boeing didn't get that memo. They are flight testing the Blk 40/45 E-3s right now with full deployment expected in 2016.
Or maybe you have heard of a little plane known as the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye? Back in
2009 it did almost exactly what I'm talking about! It detected and tracked a LACM then engaged it with a SM-6 (guided by the E-2D) deployed from a another asset. AEGIS ships are already built to do this and have been from the beginning, why else would the Spruances be equipped to fire SM-2s!
