I bought when it first came out, put it away after a few months and recently came back. I only use a few mods, since I am probably one of the few who like the new interface.

In terms of immersiveness, it is the best in actual convoy/ship attacks, but in terms of the overall experience, I would say SH4 with the RFB mod is still better.

the formulas which I use are the following:

observation scope:

1.5x - MastHeight x 100 / horizontal bars = Range

6x - MastHeight x 400 / horizontal bars = Range

Attack scope:

1.5x - MastHeight x 50 / horizontal bars = Range

6x - MastHeight x 200 / horizontal bars = Range
works out pretty good once you get the hang of it:
