Thanks guys!
The funny thing is since that incident, I've bagged two other carriers (one of which got me promoted to Captain and given command of the Balao).
I finished the current patrol in the Drum by sneaking into Truk lagoon and sinking two merchant ships, then when I saw the Yamato at anchor I fired a total of 12 torpedoes at her.... sadly six either ran deep or something, because only six hit her. I even broached and rode over a subnet trying to get her. She was out of action for sure, but not sunk.
On my next patrol I found a Taiyo class carrier south east of the Bungo Straits traveling fast (17 knots I estimated), zig zagging, with NO escort. No DDs, no nothing. I got into a good position and did a six tube fan shot, with each tube firing a half degree off from the other. Four hits and her AVGAS touched off nicely. Was very impressed at my luck -- and thinking some poor Japanese officer who ordered that probably had some hara kiri fun. Besides that carrier I sank a few merchies and an auxiliary gunboat, and they transferred me from the Drum to the Balao. Certainly made up for not sinking the Yamato last patrol!
My next patrol was operating out of Majoru(sp), in support of Operation Forager, being deployed to the West of the Marianas. Came upon a BIG task force -- 1 if not two battleships, six carriers, dozens of cruisers and destroyers... So I charged in on the surface, trying for a setup on a Fuso class battleship. Couldn't make her, but about 2,000 yards to port was ANOTHER Taiyo class carrier. Well, I set up another fan shot of six tubes, firing at 1,500 yards (I really need to start diving sooner, but I like firing as close to 1,000 yards as possible). As I dove I saw three hits, and as I ordered a depth of 350 feet, I heard another hit, and just had time to raise the scope to see the other two fish plow into her and watch her explode and start to sink. (My only sinking on that patrol). The Task Force made such an effort to get the remaining ships out of there that no destroyers remained behind to even drop a single depth charge. I trailed the TF for the rest of the next day, trying to get a shot, but couldn't and as per my orders RTBed.
I've gone years (since the game came out) without seeing a carrier and in two nights I send three of them to the bottom.
