Redfoot, I'm new as well. Check out this website:

It was invaluable to me for getting a grasp of the basics.
Reading the above posts I have a few questions of my own:
1. What BLACK and RED lines are you talking about?!?! I think I'm missing something here. I'm working at 81% realism so maybe I turned that feature off.
2. When the SO says "long" or "medium" or "short" range could you assign a value to it. As an example" when my WO says a contact is "long" range I know it's going to be over 5 km away.
This next few paragraphs is kinda what was said above:
Something I do now is I'll get a sound contact and then set a course on the bearing that the SO gives me. Usually they are at long range (On a good day with a good SO that could be 20 km) so I first take a looksee out of my periscope just in case they are nearby (It's happened to me only once). If I can't see anything I surface and head 20 km in that direction as fast as my lil boat will take me there. If I can't see'em while I'm surfaced I dive and try to get a fix on them again and repeat the whole process. Until I find them lose contact with them or get distracted by something else. Like aircraft, warships, sleep
I don't know if it's the "right" way or but it's worked for me.
Another tip: When you reach your patrol sector submerge and crawl alone at slow speed for periods of time. Hell, you have to be there for a day anyway! What's your rush!! You can hear further than you can see in most cases.
Good hunting!
