Despite being a collector myself am ashamed of myself, but it wasn't until I watched HBO's
The Pacific that I truly understand the value of a Purple Heart. The only Purple Hearts from my family you can see on the walls in the Pearl Harbor memorial, so being awarded it posthumusly has a whole different impact. Seeing what the Marines had to live through on Peleliu and Okinawa was mind blowing. Have read about the battles many times but never had a relative from the Pacific live through it to tell me their war stories and what Hell was really like.
