I've found that when you are in the thick of things or attacking something that's when an automatic save happens. I haven't had the misfortune of it totally screwing things up tho. but that'll probably happen sooner or later. If it does, I think I'd escape out and restart form the last save before it. Tho it will more than likely change the way things will happen.... what you did is not what you'll get to did again.
