Funny Utah story: Not so many years ago, when most establishments in the Salt Lake Valley still had hitching posts (A girlfriend and I once tied up her horses in front of a Taco Bell) we had a story in the newspaper about an incident in Magna, on the west side of the valley near the Oqquirh Mountains. It seems that two friends were drinking in a bar there, got drunk and got into a shouting match. Rather than coming to blows, one of the gents went outside, unhitched his friend's horse and "tried to sell it to a woman walking by on the sidewalk". The friend called the police, who of course had to arrest the offender. The next day the friend sobered up and decided not to press charges, but the Assistant District Attorney stayed up the whole night looking for something to charge him with, finally settling on "Attempting to sell property that did not belong to him."
You see, in 1985 "Horse Theft" was still punishable by hanging, and the ADA didn't want to risk it.
