I don't think I'll be using this technique anytime soon, it's not really needed. I will use the 'make a mark, wait, make another mark' technique to get a rough speed while submerged to save getting my scope spotted. If it's thick fog, I don't usually attack as I can't usually identify the ship as friend or foe. Even if I just assume and shoot at as close as I can guess, I'm likely throwing away a torpedo that I will really want later on. If I can see stuff, I have proper ranges, bearings and therefore speed. I'm not that desperate that I shoot at anything.
