I read a book that say that this tactic was used by Us submarines , but they had a 6 forward torpedos and 2 or 4 in the stern . with a 20-23 reloads.
this make things difficult for the japanese ships, that later in the war where runnig out of destroyers

From what ive read it was called a "Down the throat shot".
Not a common manuvere, but accounts ive read would lead me to beleive that it was done, albiet seldomly.
And yes, US fleet boats have 6 forward and 4 rear. If memory serves me correctly they also have 4 diesal engines and not jsut two, and could flank speed at around 21 knots on the surface.
