The only difference is that the 500 is "full" Fermi. All the 400 cards have part of the core disabled to increase yields.

Was a little shortsighted: core has been revamped a little and actually draws less power and produces less heat.
Conclusion stands though, from performance perspective: don't bother if you have a 400.
