But SH3 Commander will let you alter the record outside the game:

I have never done this but I assume it's among the options you would be able to choose from in the "Status" line on the right side of the Commander interface, once your career has ended and provided the circumstances were as decribed above. If you click on the text in the status line and there are options available they should appear for you to choose from.
