Your watch crew will let you know if anything is spotted, but, at such a high time compression, you don't have time to react. Even when playing SH3, I was advised to not go over 128x TC. I've been able to stick to that and no longer get "ambushed." Yeah, it does slow the game down quite a bit, but that's part of life on a U-boat. I might suggest you get the gramophone or radio working and enjoy listening to some music as you hunt the wide expanses.
