I've found the shading to be fine for getting a general idea, granted I'm using a modded version where the depth ranges used are 0-50m, 50-100m, 100-150m, and >150m so that much I can be pretty sure of without constantly pinging the bottom. In the latter two I know I'm always safe to crash dive at the very least, in the first two I check depth under keel as needed depending on the situation. So far no problems.

But I tend not to hang around shallow water unless I get assigned there or am just passing through on my way somewhere else. My preference is to ask for depth under keel and be told that IT'S OVER 1000!!!!
