There is a page you can pull down (from I think the periscope station) in the upper left hand corner of your screen that shows you where the defensive mine fields are laid out at all the ports. This is in GWX 3.0 Gold.

You might want to check that against your position where you went BOOM.

I think Jimbuna can confirm this as well.
