Battle of Eastern Solomons.
Aug 23.42
Couldn't find either of the 3 groups, so I headed back to Truk. At the south harbor got a faint contact, no noise, so pinged it..was the Yamato, one small carrier, 4 escorts.
It was heading for the south entrance, just 20 nms away going fast, so I rushed to cut it off. Dang ping sent a escort looking for me. I had to dive and the escort fell behind. I got on the surface figuring it was gonna hit the south entrance and despawn....and I couldn't find it. I check sonar, nothing where it was, figured it despawned.
Actually the group turned NW heading for the shallow entry on the SW side of Truk. I wasn't expecting it there and the DD was in my baffles, but so was the group when I checked sonar.
I figured once it got through the reef it would despawn, so more for the heck of it, I did a save to gave chase and see what it would do, in the end no harm, no foul.
Headed back. The DD had gone back to the group, but as they were heading into the harbor, DD's saw me. Anyway I dived flank, DD's went over me and hunted far behind. I surfaced and chased the Yamato and Carrier all the way through the shallows. I wanted to fire my M14's at the carrier bringing up the rear. All it's escorts were outside the reef and couldn't get through it to get to me. I stayed 3000 yards behind the carrier, just out of it's machine gun range and the Yamato wouldn't or couldn't shoot. He got a angle a few times, but missed, once hit the carrier. He finally got an angle on me, so I dived and let loose all 6 at the carrier going away, 4000 yard....
Never know if they would've hit, half way in route the ships vanished...despawned....
I was surprised how far they went, almost to the channel.
I went through one of the very small openings in the reef to the NW with a little subchaser tug giving chase. I can't believe he followed me through the opening out to the ocean, but he got left behind.
When I saw those big guns go off, that's when I dived. I wonder if they hadn't vanished if I could've got the Yamato to sink the carrier...
