I can't think of a better way to really calculate how much real captains evaluated "pushing their luck". They were under real orders. They really died and paid a very high price for failure. We play under fake/imagined orders and pay a very low price for failure. This is why we get so many kills per patrol than the real captains did. If we had to pay a higher price "cannot play your favorite game for a year", I'd bet we'd think twice about jumping into the thick of things too.
