You were probably never going to get out of that one. As others point out, it's impossible to "fade into the background noise" on the bottom unless you happen to be below the thermal layer (and that's rarely at 70m).
Blowing ballast, surfacing and trying to zig-zag away is probably your best bet if a) the escorts do not yet have radar and b) surface visibility is reduced or minimum. With luck, you can surface right beside a DD and vanish into the murk. I've tried it twice and escaped, though got nailed by planes before I could get back home.
