So we should 'play the game' rather than try to behave realistically? They feared the shallows because the shallows were dangerous, and they didn't have the luxury of playing real life over and over until they got it right.

Actually that is nobody's motto. The stock game gives you that message every time you file a report, and it has become a running joke, which is why you see it all the time.
We used to get threads with things like "I shot down 52 planes before they finally got me". Sometimes I think the motto "If I die I put the game on a shelf and don't play it for a year" would make people be a little more careful.
