Nearly the same as my tactic.
Your fine, but the big guys will come sooner or later and they will kick Captain Can's can (Sorry couldn't stop myself).
Just stay out of their way and you'll be fine.
Here's what they do with me most often:
1) Send out a search plane, I shoot it down
2) Send out a warship, I sink it
3) Send out a Cargo ship, I blow it up and near kill myself
P.s. That last one you need to look out for it's deadly
