Too dark for what? At night water is black, and external view is unrealistic anyway.

Oh, you just wanted an answer. Adjust the gamma settings in your video card tray.

A chrono clock that pops up when I use time compression (like that is SHIV), I haven't seen one nor been able to find a key command.
All SH3 has is the little one at the bottom of the screen. Other than that there is the stopwatch for timing torpedoes. The good news is that rather than the default being 'Base Time' as in SH4, in SH3 it is GMT, or 'Zulu' time - the time at 0 degrees longitude, in London. If you place the cursor over the time it will show you local time, or time where you are at in the world. This was something they removed from SH4 for no apparent reason.

Is there a key command to set the crew to "Battle Stations" or is that just a feature in IV?
SH4 only.

When I switch to the exterior free cam, I have to turn the camera until I find my boat. Can I get the camera to start behind the boat, facing the direction of my boat? Also, I've noticed that when I first go to exterior view (F12) if left alone the camera slowly goes down, as if it's a periscope, going down...til i move it.
In SH3 the F12 cam starts directly above the conning tower, rather than behind the boat. To keep it from going down just move it a tiny bit. You will also notice that if you use it to watch the boat go by from very close (something I love doing) as the boat passes it will 'grab' the camera and tow it along, until, as above, you move it a little.
