Using the Kiel outbound plot course has to be done before you move anywhere. it's great little tool but it's just a pre-programed series of turns, your nav is not smart if you're not at the exact start point it won't work correctly. if you use the kiel outbound before and follow up with the follow plotted course command you will be fine.
Coming back through is only slightly more tricky. there is a green spot with Kaiser Wilhem Kanal Einpunkt or something like that (it's been 20 years since I learnt German) near the western entrance. you need your last waypoint to be exactly on this spot before using the plot kiel inbound commnand.
do this and you should be fine, (land proximity considerations as before)
