The North Korean army has some modern equipment, but it's mainstay elements are updated or modified versions of fairly old Soviet systems. For example, the North Korean Air Force has a fair number of MiG-29s, but the majority of their fighters constitute different versions of the MiG-21. Similarly, while they have some modern home-designed tanks, most of their MBTs are both T-55s and both stock and heavily modified variants of the T-62.
I don't think the North Korean army has much of a chance to force a breakthrough of the DMZ; even if it did, it would have no chance of supplying exploiting forces.
