As I understand it this event was caused by red fungal spores and dust being swept high into the atmosphere, getting caught up in moist air of the monsoon and falling as red rain.

Red rain from dust is a common occurrence in Australia and even stranger types of rain have been recorded in many places over the world, including fish and frogs.
