My "suite" of security software has an option to turn off all unnecessary background processes whenever a fullscreen program (which in my case would almost always be a game) is running. It doesn't disable the firewall or AV protection.

Doing that myself manually and pulling the plug on the internet didn't make any discernible difference, so I stick with what it does on its own and that's good enough for me.
