They don't take just anybody. You have to score decently on your ASVAB. Before High school graduation, I was all set on joining the army, and wasn't too far away from signing some papers, going to MEPS, and "DEP"ing in. My lifes goal was to jump out of planes, kick butt and take names.
Then one day the AF recruiter called me, saying he was impressed with my ASVAB scores and wanted me to come down to the office to talk. As i recall, i scored a 97 in mechanical. Since i was already in an ROTC like program that was affiliated with the AF at the time (no army one near by), i said, "sure why not". Heh,. Well, obviously his sales pitch worked.
Only problem is, i signed up as "General Mechanical" since nothing specific was open. I signed on to be a Jet Mechanic, and they made me a construction worker.
AF has something exactly like the Navy SeaBee's... who would have thunk it. Shame they don't advertise that. It's all about the high tech jobs in the recruiting office. What a bunch of crock.
