Yes, it is necessary to install DX9 in order to run SHIV correctly. It will not harm anything else. Follow the installation instructions in this
thread you should have no problems. I have six different versions of SHIV with accompanying mods and they all run just fine under Win 7. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate and really like it as an OS. If you should run into difficulties come back here and post your problems, this forum is a great place to get help and advice.
