Huh. You know, I'm pretty sure I've seen those laying around in scrap yards up north. Always figured they were buoys for the reservoirs, but now that I think about it those scrapyards were a good drive away from any. Glad that it didn't become a standard with the logging industry (no surprise with the kind of damage it would cause to the wood).

That's a really cool and unique find, by the way. I might email that off to my grandparents and see what they might know about it.
