actually it's still a reasonable price in comparison to e.g. Alfa Romeo 145 which I was driving few years ago. With only 1,4 litre engine and sth like 108 HP u needed to keep high RPM all the time which in winter ended with sth like 14l/100km in "city-cycle". Diesels are much cheaper. Can't give you values for Mercedes but for Audi(a 3-cylinder, 1,4l. turbo diesel): about 330 kms for sth like 25 euro (atm the prices in Poland are higher so you wouldn't make as much) in "city-cycle".
