The problems concerning the torpedoes in the Southern hemisphere, or actually near the Equator stems from the difference in the Earth's magnetic field at that location. The magnetic detonators on the torpedoes were calibrated in the Northern hemisphere, where they were manufactured. I guess they just assumed the torpedoes work the same in the war zone.
