I'll hunt around and see if I can find out any information on what ships were anchored where in Tokyo Bay that day. I do remember my father telling me that Halsey sent a squadron of mine sweepers a couple of days ahead of the big boys to clear the harbor, promptly followed by the hospital ships to recover the Allied POW's. My father's ship, the
Tamalpais, came into the bay with the hospital ships. (The Tamalpais was new construction, and never carried oil, only fresh water, which, my dad never failed to inform, was infinitely more valuable than oil in the Pacific war, although the USN was late to realize it .) No fleet carriers came into the bay, but instead stood off outside to provide air cover. There was a very real concern that fanatical elements might stage suicide attacks on the fleet, so things were a bit more tense than the pictures let on.
