I've been dealing with the exact same issue with my 25" widescreen for quite some time now, especially whenever I update my NVIDIA drivers. It seems that every time I update my graphics drivers, I have to go in and reset my screen resolutions for the PC and SHIV. My problem arises after I exit the game, right after resetting the game resolution. Once I restart the game, none of my SS even open up in any of my image viewers, MS Paint included. I have finagled with the settings for countless hours until I found a, sort of, makeshift but self perpetuating solution.
If I set my resolution to it's native 1920X1080, oddly enough, my taskbar and other items move outside the range of my viewing area. I had to go into my NVIDIA control panel and set it to accept resolutions that aren't supported by Windows. Then I have to use the "Resize Desktop" setting in my NVIDIA Control panel (which changes the resolution anyway), synchronize it with the standard PC Desktop resolution settings and then again with the SHIV graphics settings. Once I do that, these same resolutions would now be found in my SHIV, Graphics Setting, drop down menu. The odd part is that whenever I restart the game, after synchronizing my resolutions, if I go back into my game graphics setting, I get a message that the game resolution settings don't match my PC resolution settings. The problem occurs right here, if I reset them again to match my NVIDIA and PC resolution settings. If I do, I cannot open any screenshots. If I ignore the message and continue playing without re-synchronizing the resolutions, I can open any screenshots. I know it sounds confusing but I have tried countless hours searching for another solution. As it stands, I don't want to mess with any settings anymore because it's such a pain to figure it all out again if a different solution fails.
