Those U-Boats sure were doing a job on merchant shipping off the East coast in the early years...They even sunk a Mexican tanker (the Potrero del Llano) bound for the U.S. off the coast of Florida, even though it had a large Mexican flag painted on its side, and therefore a "neutral" ship. This incident prompted the Mexican govt. to join the Allied effort against the Germans.
